South Texas businessman James Hernandez announced on Tuesday that he will be seeking the Republican nomination for Texas House District 34 currently held by Democrat Abel Herrero.

Hernandez filed paperwork on Tuesday to formally announce his candidacy for Texas House.

“We need accountability, responsibility and transparency in our government and in our district,” said Hernandez. “My priorities are taxes, public education and small business and I will do whatever it takes to represent District 34.”

Hernandez is currently running unopposed in the primary and will likely face Democrat Abel Herreo for a seat which has had a kind of love/hate relationship with him in the past.

Hernandez says that he is stretching across party lines and it will take “all people” in District 34 to make this happen.

“I am running as a republican but I will represent everybody from our district in Austin,” Hernandez said. “I want to serve the people of this district.”
