Leading clergy from one the Lone Star state’s largest voting blocs has come out against Governor Abbott’s decision on Friday to not off resettlement to refugees. The Texas Catholic Bishops released a statement on Friday that cited religious arguments against the political move aimed at keeping refugees from calling Texas home. In their statement the Texas Catholic Bishops said that the move was “deeply discouraging and disheartening” and that Governor Abbott’s announcement was “simply misguided.”
The statement went on to point out that as Catholics, an essential aspect of the faith is to welcome the stranger and care for the alien–a direct jab at Abbott who converted to the faith some years ago.
We will have local reaction to the announcement from Governor Abbott and the response from area Catholics later today.
