The Texas Department of Transportation made the rumors official Friday afternoon that FIGG Bridge Engineers had been sacked from the Harbor Bridge Project in Corpus Christi. TXDOT said in a statement that they asked Flatiron/Dragados, LLC, to find a new designer for the project’s main spans — perhaps one of the most critical links in the project.

In their own defense, FIGG released a statement Friday night saying that “FIGG was shocked by Texas Department of Transportation’s press release today,” as if to suggest the move caught them off guard.

While on-site Friday morning, South Texas Journal reporters interviewed officials who hinted at the idea that the news was coming and that managers had been planning for such a move for the past few weeks. However, today’s statement came only hours after workers and key management staff began dropping significant hints that the move was forth coming.

FIGG began taking heavy fire after an October 2019 National Transportation Safety Board review of the pedestrian bridge collapse at FIU found the firm at fault.

TxDOT has said that this could result in delays to the project and would be providing future updates.
